Selecting an Affiliate Program Partnership for Your Content

Affiliate websites are one of the fastest growing wings of e-commerce. You can literally find thousands of affiliate partnerships to choose from. This is both good and bad news. The good news is that there are great affiliate deals to be found online that haven’t yet been over-saturated by partnerships. The bad news is that there are affiliate partners out there that you shouldn’t touch with a virtual ten-foot pole.

There are a number of steps you should take before signing up with an affiliate partner. First, you should read the affiliates terms and conditions. Too often, budding marketers skip over an affiliates terms. An affiliate partner may not allow for Google Adwords or other marketing avenues so make sure this is not explicitly laid out in the affiliates terms and conditions. If there are no terms of service, this should be a warning in itself. A reputable affiliate will normally have terms of service.

Payment is obviously a huge one. Make sure the affiliate has reasonable terms. Some affiliates, such as Amazon, only pay out after a set number of sales—you do not make a dime on the first, second, or even tenth sale. Other affiliates will pay out for each sale. The flip side is that an affiliate with a sales minimum may also have a better percentage payout. The best-case scenario is to find an affiliate partner that pays out for every sale and offers a good percentage. Amazon pays quarterly, with a minimum that you set as a free associate member.

This will be all for naught if the affiliate does not pay out in a timely manner. Try and not learn from experience, in other words, don’t get burned. Instead, learn from other people’s experience. Go to affiliate marketing forums to see if a particular affiliate has a good or bad reputation. The trouble here is that a new affiliate might not have a marketer base yet, and these affiliates usually offer the most attractive terms in order to bring affiliates in. Use some common sense—if the affiliate’s site is well designed and they offer a good and useful product, you could try and test the waters.

On that front, it is sometimes a good idea to find an affiliate partner that is not overly saturated. If you offer a service that can’t be found on every other web page, it can lead to a better sales rate. However, once again there’s a flip side: if it’s a virtually unknown site, it’s harder to build up buyer’s trust, as compared to well-known affiliate programs like Amazon or the Discover card. A lot of the onus falls on you—if your site is well designed and well managed, buyers will trust your affiliate links.

Custom content can lead to sales or new clientele. Think of two sites: one site offers little to no information on a topic. Another site addresses any and all topics affecting an industry. Remember the web in the old days? You could cram in a bunch of keywords at the bottom of the page regardless of grammar, and pretty much devoid of any aesthetic sense, and search engines ate it up. It’s probably a good thing those days are over because websites have become a lot more professional. That still doesn’t mean that people are using keywords to the best of their advantage. In fact, because it is much harder to write keyword-targeted content, many site owners avoid the issue.

Each keyword list should be tailored to a specific demographic. Once you have the keyword list together, it is time to optimize content so that the site provides relevant content surrounding that list of keywords. The most important part of content optimization is the title. What this means is you should title the article with a specific keyword in mind—the HTML link for the article is vital for page rank. This keyword should then be repeated in the article—but not so much that the text becomes unnatural or, worse, unreadable.

If that’s the case, you could risk the site being banned by search engines outright. In addition to keyword popularity tools, you should also use keyword density tools for your site’s content. If the keyword density is too high, the site could be red-flagged as offering unnatural, inorganic content. All of these issues are core to keyword planning.

Affiliate Diversification leads to Multiple Streams of Income

You hear a lot about “multiple streams of income” in a lot of marketing hype, commercial messages and ads for ebooks. The fact that the phrase is somewhat overused is not enough to devalue it. The actual reality is that having several streams of income is exactly the way many affiliate marketers run their businesses, including me.

How do you get to the point where you have reliable multiple streams of income? I will attempt to answer at least from my own perspective.

I just kind of naturally evolved with many different streams of income, but when I first started out there was nothing. My first check came from Amazon, then more followed including networks like CJ and Linkshare. Eventually I branched out into classified marketing and 2 tier recruiting, and over time I had ten or so small checks coming in.

Truthfully, the way I bumbled into the world of “multiple streams of income” was that I was trying a lot of things online to make money. It was not brilliance that lead me to it, but simply joining and promoting a lot of different things. Some worked, and some did not. Funny thing is that several of the programs I joined in 1998 are still active, and still make me money.

Here is a list of affiliate programs, networks, marketing services and the like that make money within my small empire of sites.

Shareasale Affiliate Network, Amazon Associates Program, Linkshare Affiliate Network, CJ Affiliate Network, USFreeAds Affiliate Program, USFreeAds Premium Ad Membership, Google Adsense Program, Online Future Affiliate Program, AdlandPro Affiliate Program, ClickBank Affiliate Network, Squidoo, ZLiO Shops, CPA Empire, Avantlink (working on it), VIP Profits and I am sure there are a few more out there.

The point is that even if I only earn a few hundred or less from each stream, the aggregate of all the streams is a significant amount of money earned through my version of affiliate marketing. Since I do SEO marketing for natural content listings, I never buy keywords. I do research keywords, but not for PPC. I do it to determine what to market and how, and to have the right keywords and phrases on my pages.

Multiple streams of income is really a smart way to develop a business like this in case you are first starting out, but it is certainly not the only model. If you can make a fortune in one program, then why not? I just never had that even begin to happen to me, so I have worked on lots of different ones over the years.

Can I sell affiliate products from a blog?

“I have a blog and wonder if I can use it to sell and make money with affiliate programs. How can I do it”?

That is the question I recently received and I wanted to attempt to answer it as best I can.

Yes you can sell from your blog, but first you must consider what the main subject matter of your blog is. Does it already have incoming traffic? Do you already have subscribers to your RSS feed?

If the answer is yes to those questions, then by all means just go find a good affiliate program like the Amazon Associates Program and sign up. Then load some affiliate widgets on the side bar of the blog and see how it goes. Also, make some reviews of certain products within the article content area, and load in the affiliate links within the context of the articles. If you already have the traffic, then the sales will follow. You may have to test different ways to present the products to get the highest success rate.

Also, sign up for Google Adsense. Place the code on the blogger, and use the large rectangle as it seems to be the most well clicked in my expereince.

There are 2 examples of ways an established blog can make some money. But, if the blog does not have existing traffic, then I recommend that you first build content, traffic and subscribers before adding the affiliate links.

The exception is if you have a blog about sports and sports related products already. By all means place articles about the sports stuff you prefer and install the contextual ads within the article content. The content and affiliate products may actually help get the blog more traffic through the content indexing in search.

Some really good affiliate networks provide content articles for products that affiliates can use in their blogs and websites. I do not recommend using only these pre-written articles for your content. Always publish a good mix of your own original content with the articles written by affiliate program managers or company writers.

Keep your blog fresh every day and eventually it will begin to find it’s own unique traffic and then if the affiliate products you offer are within the context of the unique content, you will very likely sell and make money.
